![]() This is where the most fun is to be had, as working together to triumph against the physics-based puzzles is a very satisfying thing indeed. ![]() If you are playing on your own, you are able to switch characters, although, as mentioned above, Trine is best experienced in co-op play with two others. Combining the strengths of the characters is an absolute joy, particularly in co-op play. Compared to the other characters, the wizard initially looked useless in a fight to me, but I soon learnt that conjured objects can be used in various ways against the enemies, and sweeping them off ledges with, say, dragging a box into them is a guilty pleasure. ![]() Finally, the wizard is able to conjure up objects such as boxes and planks to climb on, and is able to levitate as well as move certain objects in the world. The bow and arrow is obviously useful for attacking enemies from a distance, and the grappling hook is able to attach to wooden objects, allowing the thief to swing to places that perhaps the other characters aren’t able to reach. The thief, on the other hand, has a bow and arrow as well as a grappling hook. The shield can be used to block and reflect enemy attacks as well as flurries of fireballs, and a gravity move that allows for the shield to manipulate items is added later. The game also features three characters – Pontius the knight, Zoya the thief and Amadeus the wizard – and you make use of their unique abilities to solve puzzles and help guide the characters through the levels. This Enchanted Edition also adds in online co-op, meaning that the multiplayer is no longer limited to local play. Still, at least it’s kept to a minimum and is also told nicely enough with its narration, which makes the game feel like the fairytale that Frozenbyte obviously wanted it to be.įor those unaware, Trine is a 2.5d puzzle platformer with co-op for up to three players. Combined, the soldier is ready for almost anything – Unless his enemies are far away. There’s certainly nothing unique about the story though, and it does nothing overly interesting with its standard fantasy theme. The soldier offers a strong and powerful sword defended by an even stronger shield. The main driving offensive force is a brooding battle-ready solider. Minimal damage is caused but the distance helps with multiple attempts. The Thief carries a bow that is perfect for long distance and used by holding down the right trigger. Admittedly this can be satisfying but not always feasible and quick enough to be effective. The Wizard’s summoned metal boxes, done by tracing a square on the GamePad or with the right Thumbstick, can be used to smash enemies or knock them around. All three offer some type of offensive tactic. Trine is mostly puzzles and traversing but when the player is asked to defend the three, things become a little clumsy. Trine is a platformer first and an adventure game second – With the latter being severely weaker. The soldier can also use his magnetized shield to control metal objects but pulling and pushing them around. With his powerful sword and strong shield, the Solider is the main protector of the group. The Soldier, the most noble of the group, is the main combat force. Her bow is also used to defeat enemies and cut ropes and other objects loose. Her skills allow her to traverse and swing through levels with a grappling hook. The Thief is the quick and shadowy figure of the bunch. The Wizard can also summon metal boxes that can be used to help manipulate levels by acting like a jumping point or a counterweight. With his abilities, the Wizard can stop and move objects and platforms around the world. The Wizard is the most non-combat ready of the three. Trine, much like Trine 2, focuses around three unknowing heroes The Wizard, The Thief, and The Soldier – All three possess different abilities to help complete and surpass a variety of puzzles. The game also offers local multiplayer play. Trine: Enchanted Edition is a remastered version of the 2009 release, built in the beautiful Trine 2 engine. I was excited to have the opportunity to play the original Trine with the Wii U eShop release of Trine: Enchanted Edition. My first introduction to Frozenbyte’s Trine series was during the release of Trine 2: Directors Cut on the Wii U eShop.
